Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a type of wireless technology that is utilized to identify a tagged object or person. Through radio waves, data is transmitted via components and is then relayed back to a computer program.

Frequently applied to inventory or assets, RFID trackers can easily identify specific items and are often used to help improve supply chains and processes, create accuracy, and enable quick tracking.

RS' range of RFID systems provides quality solutions for a variety of applications across multiple frequencies. Whatever your RFID product requirements, it's easy to find the right device or component with our advanced search options. Choose from world-renowned manufacturers for top quality, durability, and great results.

What are RFID systems?

An RFID system is usually made up of a selection of components including tags, which are comprised of RFID chips, a reader, and one or more RFID antennas. Similar to barcodes, information is read by an RFID device. But, unlike with the labelling counterpart, there doesn't need to be a line of sight. This makes identifying and tracking objects quick, easy, and reliable.

Applying an RFID tracker to an item means the identity can be read from close or long range, depending on the application's needs and the products used. The RFID chip usually contains certain information, as given by the user. The reader translates this, via radio waves, into data that can be transferred to a central database for analysis.

RFID tags are made from material that protects them from external conditions, but the exact substance depends on the intended use.

The different types of RFID solutions

Depending on the application, different RFID solutions will be required. Typically, three frequency ranges can be utilized within RFID systems: low, high, and ultra-high. Lower frequencies have a shorter read range, meaning these options are often suitable for applications such as ID cards and car fobs.

Ultra-high frequencies offer long-range RFID solutions and can be further divided into two types:

  • Passive RFID tags: These feature a shorter read range within the ultra-high frequency category. This is because they have no power source of their own and therefore rely on the power from the RFID These RFID devices are commonly used throughout a variety of industries.
  • Active RFID tags: These feature their own power supply in the form of a battery and can therefore read longer ranges. They're often seen in large-scale manufacturing industries and vehicle tracking.

Typical applications of radio frequency identification

Radio frequency identification devices can be used across a huge range of applications and can be customized, depending on the solutions needed. Common uses include door fobs, vehicle identification, and return tracking.

Some other typical uses of RFID systems include:

  • Production control and supply chain processes
  • Tool and equipment transport and tracking
  • Logistics
  • Access control
  • Copy protection
  • Door monitoring
  • Item/merchandise tracking
  • Each application will require different types of RFID products and components, depending on the nature of the identification need and the processes surrounding it.
